Sandy Lake wasn't as well used as it is today, but the aqua lake, with sandy bottom, remains a delight. Its a shallow lake that in many parts you can walk in it comfortably.
Its tales make the lake even more delightful. Years ago, it was known as the lake of Spirits. Near the south end of the lake sits a red heart - shaped rock formation: water seems to stutter over its top. Legend has it a native princess died there: two of her lovers battled over her and remain battling over her heart today. It is known as the great heart and is one of the prettiest sites in the Kawarthas, especially on a beautiful sun-filled-blue-sky-day. The aqua lake is spring fed. It is believed many Native battles were fought there and weapons from the past have been found on the shores.
This marvellous lake that was once the best secret in the Kawarthas, but today, it is a popular swimming hole for many families.
